The Topfield Equestrian Center (TEC), where people with disabilities can overcome physical, psychological and emotional barriers, is located at 115 Stonecrop Lane, Cold Spring, NY 10516 in Putnam County.
From TEC: "TEC strives to offer an environment where people with disabilities can overcome physical, psychological and emotional barriers. Through equine-assisted activities, both on horseback and on the ground, we bring new found joy and abilities to our clients.
"High atop a windy hill in New York's Hudson Valley, there is a traditional-looking wood barn and stable complex. On any given day, a dozen horses can be found grazing in the paddocks, happily munchiny hay in ther stalls, or carrying riders around an indoor arena. Yet this is no ordinary riding center; it is an extraordinary riding center known as
TEC
, the Therapeutic Riding Center. Here, in a serene and healing environment, children and adults with a range of disabilities experience the physical, emotional and cognitive growth that is possible through equine-assisted therapy.
"Equine-assisted therapy can help improve the quality of life for people with disabilities as diverse as autism, down syndrome and cerebral palsy. A person on a horse is in the best possible body position to encourage the development of normal muscle tone, balance and coordination. The rider typically forms an emotional attachment with the horse in a guided fashion (helping groom or feed the horse, for example) can evoke positive change."
