From Scenic Hudson: "Madam Brett Park hugs Fishkill Creek, which played a prominent role in Beacon's development. Along it stood a gristmill owned by the park's namesake — Catheryna Rombout Brett (1687-1764), the first European settler in the present-day city. The mill was an important gathering place for farmers and Native Americans inhabiting both shores of the Hudson River hereabouts. In the 1800s, the creek powered a profusion of hat factories (including the Tioronda Hat Works, located in the brick building adjacent to the park), which earned Beacon the nickname "New York's Hat-Making Capital. The water quality at the River Pool site is one of the best in Dutchess County.

From River Pool: "Like its historic precedents, the Beacon River Pool is partially submerged in the water, allowing River water to flow through. From the shore of the park, a ramp leads to the pool. This prototype pool is 20 feet in diameter with a water depth between 24 and 30 inches. The pool bottom, a high strength net made of Dyneema twine, is held in place by a rigid structural perimeter tube. Go to the park to relax and read under the shade of a tree. Visit the park to exercise. Take a walk in the park. Walking is one of the best exercises for your entire body; and every park has places to walk; most in beautiful settings surrounded by trees and nature. Whether you visit a small local park or a large state or county park; parks offer an opportunity to unwind, escape from your daily routines and breathe in fresh air.

Dutchess parks offer wonderful opportunities to exercise while enjoying outdoor fun year-round. Hundreds of miles of trails are available for walking, hiking, and biking, and in winter you can enjoy cross-country skiing or snow-shoeing. State parks often have trail maps available at the entrance to the park. Trails can be rugged footpaths and mountain trails, or paved greenway trails along county roads.     Burger Hill's seventy-six-acres of open meadows and rural, scenic beauty are perfect for bird-watching. "A half-mile trail leads uphill through open meadows abounding with birds to a 550-foot hilltop affording panoramic vistas stretching from the Berkshires to the Catskills.     Fishkill Ridge Preserve
    If you are a serious hiker looking for a wilderness setting, consider going to Fishkill Ridge. On the preserve's well-marked trails you can walk beside a stream to an impressive waterfall, scramble up rocks and step onto outcroppings affording some of the most breathtaking long-range vistas in the Hudson Highlands. For most of your trek you'll be so cocooned in nature that civilization and its stresses will fade from memory. Fishkill Ridge also afford opportunities for exploring the Hudson Valley's geological past. The rounded boulders and bare summits encountered on your hike were sculpted by glaciers that passed through the region 12,000 years ago, and extraordinary birdlife, especially its large raptors. There's a good chance you'll spot turkey vultures, bald eagles and falcons engaged in aerial reconnaissance throughout your overland excursion.

Breakneck Ridge, a well know trail, was rated by Newsweek as one of the top 10 day hikes in America. The 5.5 mile Breakneck Ridge trail rises 1,250 feet in only a ¾ mile stretch.

    James Baird State Park
    James Baird State Park, a 590-acre park, is located at 14 Maintenance Lane, Pleasant Valley, NY 12569. The park has much to offer. There are spacious open and wooded picnic areas and two picnic pavilions which can accommodate up to 300 people each by reservation. There is also a sports complex where visitors enjoy playing basketball, softball, tennis and volleyball. Additionally there is a playground and a nature center. Open summer weekends, the nature center loans recreational equipment and offers nature programs. Outdoor enthusiasts will find the seven miles of scenic wooded trails ideal for hiking in the warm months and cross country skiing and snowshoeing in the wintertime.

    Long Dock Park / Beacon Point Park
    Long Dock Park, aka Beacon Point Park, is an exciting riverfront destination offering a kayak pavilion and beach for launching boats, rehabilitated wetlands and meadows that attract wildlife, and the restored, historic Red Barn, now Scenic Hudson's River Center for arts and environmental-education activities. One of the most popular attractions at Long Dock's tip, is Beacon Point, a shoreline installation by renowned artist George Trakas. The work projects out over the river (at high tide, water actually flows through it) making this a perfect place to fish, sunbathe and admire magnificent vistas of Newburgh Bay and the Hudson Highlands.

    Madam Brett Park
    Madam Brett Park provides a perfect place to explore the ecology of a vital Hudson River tributary and the tidal wetland at its mouth. Fishkill Marsh supports a wide variety of wildlife. It furnishes a home for amphibians and aquatic mammals, including muskrats; serves as a hunting ground for ospreys, bald eagles and other raptors; and is a stopover for migratory birds. A boardwalk and observation platforms afford up-close discoveries of these and other creatures. A waterfall at the park's eastern end is especially impressive and raucous in spring or after heavy rains.

    Mills Norrie State Park
    Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park is located at Staatsburg NY 12580, Dutchess County in the Hudson River Valley. A serene wooded area with glimpses of the river provides an ideal location. The park's marina as well as its camping sites are extremely popular, as are the numerous hiking trails. Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park adjoins Ogden Mills and Ruth Livingston Mills Memorial State Park and together, comprise more than 1,000-acres. Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park offers exhilarating recreational opportunities and activities for visitors of all ages. In addition to the park's ideal locations for camping, a marina consisting of slip space and a boat launch ramp is also a popular area within the park.

    Mount Beacon Park
    The trail up Mount Beacon is steep, but occasional switchbacks make the aerobic workout manageable. The hike actually begins on a staircase following the course of the Beacon Incline Railway, in the early 20th century the world's steepest funicular and one of the Hudson Valley's prime tourist attractions. Observation platforms atop the stairs preview the treat awaiting those who reach the summit, sublime vistas stretching from the Hudson Highlands to the Catskill Mountains. After a rest, you can explore the ruins of the incline railway's powerhouse or follow a short trail leading to a monument commemorating a signal fire built atop the mountain during the Revolutionary War. It was one of many beacons, spanning from the Highlands into New Jersey, intended to warn of British troop movements.

    Poets' Walk Park
    Quiet Cove Riverfront Park, a 27-acre park (with 5 plus acres to the West of the rail line) on the banks of the Hudson River, is located at Clear Water Drive, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601. Quiet Cove offers picnic tables, grills, fishing, walking trails and scenic overlooks on the upper section of the park and breathtaking views of the Hudson River.

    Taconic State Park - Rudd Pond Area
    Taconic State Park - Rudd Pond Area is located at 59 Rudd Pond Road, Millerton, NY 12546. The park is located along 16 miles of the Taconic Mountain Range. Two developed areas, Copake Falls and Rudd Pond, offer an extensive trail system with terrain that varies from easy to challenging, offering spectacular views.

    Rudd Pond has 15 tent sites and 26 tent platform sites, each providing campers with grand views of the ridge, pond, and nearby countryside. Enjoy boating on the scenic 64 acre pond. Visitors who possess regional boating permits are also welcome to launch their own rowboats, canoes, or kayaks. A variety of fish, including bass, sunfish and pickerel, inhabit the pond and fishing is permitted with a New York State Freshwater Fishing License. In the winter months, visitors can ice skate and fish on the pond, conditions permitting.

    Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park
    Walkway Over the Hudson provides access to the Hudson River's breathtaking landscape for pedestrians, hikers, joggers, bicyclists, and people with disabilities. The bridge deck stands 212 feet above the river's surface and is 6,678 feet (1.28 miles) long, making it the longest, elevated pedestrian bridge in the world. Walkway Over The Hudson State Historic Park. Entrances to Walkway Over the Hudson Park are located in Poughkeepsie NY 12601 in Dutchess County, and in Highland NY, Ulster County.

    Wilcox Memorial Park
    Wilcox Memorial Park, a 615-acre park, is located at 1639 Route 199, Milan NY 12581 in northern Dutchess. Wilcox was formerly the estate and farm of Mrs. Frederick P. Wilcox, its 18th century complex of farm buildings still stand today. Wilcox Memorial Park offers a 5 acre swimming lake that is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Attractions also include a second lake for fishing, 27 site campgrounds, 2 new playgrounds, and a basketball court. There is an extensive hiking trail system throughout the 615 acre park. This park has 4 pavilions that can be reserved through the online reservation system. Pavilion C is currently the largest pavilion in Wilcox Park, complete with kitchen facilities and restrooms and a great view of the lake from its location at the top of the hill. Admission is charged to the public when the swimming lake is open.
