Rockland County

Verified (2015) up-to-date and comprehensive list of parks in Rockland, New York. Rockland parks are among the most beautiful parks in New York State. Find the best parks for kids, the family, and everyone. If you enjoy fresh air, beautiful landscapes, and nature, visit a park in Rockland. Year-round there are fun activities and great attractions at the park, with many fun things to do for kids and the whole family. Go to the park to relax and read under the shade of a tree. Visit the park to exercise. Enjoy a walk in the park. Walking is one of the best exercises for your entire body; and every park has places to walk surrounded by trees and nature. Whether you visit a small local park or a large state or county park; parks offer an opportunity to unwind, escape from your daily routines and breathe in fresh air.

"During the past 41 years, the Rockland County Park System has grown from one park of 3 acres to a network of 28, comprising 3,100 acres. The goal has been to provide county residents ready access to local parks without having to endure traffic congestion or drive long distances to enjoy nature's beauty. Park acquisitions have been attained through County funds matched with federal and state grants along with land donations, tax delinquency and partnerships with Land Trusts and other municipalities.

"Our parks, now conservatively worth some $230,000,000, are situated on or near mountainous ridges that preserve our skylines as forever green and uncluttered by high-rise. They provide a variety of both active and passive recreation along with preserving parts of our county's history. Recent acquisitions of the last remaining active farms have preserved part of Rockland's past and continue to produce locally grown farm fresh produce. The parks provide excellent nature trails where one may, if you look carefully, encounter a variety of animals such as a red-tailed hawk, pileated woodpecker, barred owl, white-tailed deer, red fox or a wild turkey. There are scenic vantage points at South Mountain, Buttermilk Falls, Mountainview Nature Park, Gurnee Park, Kakiat and Clausland Mountain."

"Two of our county parks offer residents an enclosed area for their dogs to run off-leash. These enclosed areas are called "Dog Runs". They provide a community setting in which people can gather and socialize and where they can observe the interaction of groups of dogs at play."

Parks in Rockland offer opportunities to exercise while enjoying outdoor year-round fun. Many parks provide miles of trails for hiking for all levels of hikers. Many kids enjoy hiking and feel very grownup after they select a branch from the ground that they can use as a hiking stick. Rockland's Bear Mountain Park has trails that are part of the famous Appalachian Trail. Walk one of these trails and you can be one of the select group that has 'walked the Appalachian Trail' - even if you are walking only a small part of the Appalachian trail.

State parks often provide trail maps that are available at the park entrance. Trails can be rugged footpaths and mountain trails, or paved greenway trails along county roads. Activities on Rockland hiking trails include walking, biking, hiking, cross-country-skiing, snowshoeing, and nature walks. In summer, you may want to find a park with boating, fishing, swimming, playing fields, and playgrounds for young children.
