845-338-0071
The Hudson River Maritime Museum is located at 50 Rondout Landing, Kingston NY 12401 in Ulster County.

From Hudson River Maritime Museum: The museum, located on the historic Rondout waterfront, was established in 1980 to collect, preserve, research, exhibit and interpret a collection of historical artifacts related to the preservation of the maritime heritage of the Hudson River and its tributaries. This is the only museum in New York State exclusively dedicated to this mission.

"The Hudson River Maritime Museum was founded in 1980 by steamboat and tugboat enthusiasts, as well as local citizens who wanted to preserve the shipping history of the Hudson River. Kingston’s role as the most important port between New York and Albany in the 19th century made it the logical place to establish a Hudson River maritime museum. Kingston/Rondout was the terminus of the Delaware & Hudson Canal which brought anthracite coal from eastern Pennsylvania from 1828 to 1898 to be transported on the Hudson River to New York City and other ports at a time when coal was the dominant fuel in use. Kingston was also an important stop for passenger steamboats bringing vacationers to the area, many of whom traveled on to the Catskills. In addition, Rondout Creek was the home of the Cornell Steamboat Company tugboat fleet, the dominant towing company on the Hudson from 1880 to the 1930s, a time when much freight was transported by boat. A second lighthouse of brick and stone was constructed in 1867 on the south side of the creek. This second light was abandoned in 1915 when the present dikes were constructed at the Creek's entrance. Demolished in 1954 when its roof collapsed, the second lighthouse's stone footings are still visible today. Rondout Lighthouse | Ulster  website and more . . .

The Coast Guard, the original owners of the lighthouse, relinquished jurisdiction, and the property reverted back to New York State. The Conservancy then bought the deteriorated remains of the lighthouse for one dollar. Efforts to stabilize the building began shortly thereafter while local architect Alex Wade completed plans for the reconstruction. A wooden barge was built to haul construction materials including tons of masonry materials. . . More than 10,000 new bricks were required to replace bricks that had crumbled. The entire masonry structure, including the massive stone base, has been reconstructed. Saugerties Lighthouse with Bed & Breakfast | Ulster  website and more . . .
